The Treasure Island Sailing Center (TISC) is committed to developing the next generation of socially minded sailors to be active in our community. Sailing is a medium TISC uses to teach important life skills, such as goal setting, teamwork and communication, self-confidence and leadership.

A central part of our youth development curriculum is our Junior Instructor Program. Junior Instructors (JIs) gain leadership training by interning for TISC’s Summer Youth Program for a period of 4 weeks. This enrichment program is for sailors of all abilities aged 16 to 18. We encourage all interested sailors to apply.

Through experiential learning activities, mentoring, job-training and sailing, students will develop key skills that will allow them to be active leaders in the community and have a lifelong appreciation for the marine environment. We hope to empower our youth to take initiative, develop a sense of responsibility and work to strengthen our community.

Job development for our JIs begins with a weeklong instructor orientation before Summer Camp begins. During our Summer Camp, JIs will dedicate half of the day to learning sailing in our Teen FJ Program and half of the day assisting our Senior Instructors with planning and management of our Youth Sailing Classes.

As members of the team of instructors, JIs and Senior Instructors will work together to ensure that the students are provided with a fun and safe environment. JIs are required to act as positive role models to our Youth Sailors by helping them rig, select sailing gear and learn how to sail. JIs will also launch boats, help supervise the students, assist in the preparation and teaching of classes and support the programs in other areas as needed.

Junior Instructors receive a discount to our Summer Teen Program:

  • First Year JIs are given a 50% discount to our Summer Teen Program ($300 for 4 weeks of half-day sailing. Scholarships are available for those in need)
  • Second Year JIs are given 100% discount to our Summer Teen Program

JIs that successfully complete our program are encouraged to apply to become Senior Instructors. TISC will consider all successful JIs for future employment, although employment with TISC is not guaranteed. Those selected to join our staff will be sponsored by TISC to complete the US Sailing Level 1 Dinghy Instructor Certification.
