Adaptive
The TISC Sailing Program strives to make sailing accessible to all those with a desire. Sailing is an all-inclusive sport, as it levels the playing field for all participants. Physically disabled persons gain a sense of independence and self-confidence while sailing and are able to compete equally against able-bodied sailors. TISC instructors are trained to support the needs of each unique participant and promote safety both on and off the water. To better serve all participants, facility upgrades including the instalment of an ADA-compliant ramp are currently in the TISC Facility Development plans.
The boats used for Adaptive Sailing include Access Dinghies and J24's. Participants of the Adaptive program can come independently or are affiliated with local programs. Currently, TISC works with local programs promoting sailing for physically and developmentally disabled students.
Currently, TISC runs five types of classes for adaptive students: Blind Sailing Program, Family Adaptive Sailing Program, Adaptive Group Orientations, our Youth Co-able Summer Program and Private Lessons.
TISC is committed to serving the adaptive community. However, due to the nature of sailing and the limitations of our facility, we are unable to accommodate all disabilities. To find out the specific requirements in order to participate, please click here.
Blind Sailing Program (Youth and Adult)
This class is done in partnership with the Marin Sailing School Program for the Blind. Our goal is to open sailing to visually impaired non-sailors to promote their participation in outdoor sports. In this class students are taught how to rely on the feel and sound of the boat and wind, sailing terminology and water safety. Each boat has 2 highly trained sighted crew members and 2 visually impaired sailors. This program is offered one Saturday each month; 10am – 3pm (Please check our schedule, for more information including how to register contact the Program Director at 415-421-2225 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Family Adaptive Sailing Program
This program makes sailing accessible to youth with physical, developmental, and other disabilities and allows them to enjoy sailing with their family members in a fun and friendly environment. This class will use access dinghies, two person boats specifically designed for people with disabilities. All participants will learn valuable sailing skills that will allow them to enjoy being on-the-water and sailing in Clipper Cove. Classes are available one Saturday each month; 9:30am – 12pm (Please check our schedule).
Youth Adaptive Co-Able Sailing Camp (Available for Individuals and groups ages 10 – 15)
The Co-Able sailing camp is part of our youth summer camp program. Adaptive students learn alongside our summer camp participants in a safe, fun and friendly environment. Through this experience, students will meet new students and enjoy sailing on the bay. Students are paired throughout the week so they can work together on teamwork, communication, sailing and most of all, have fun! These classes are week long sessions Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 12:15pm (Please check our schedule).
Adaptive Sailing Orientations (Available for Groups)
These 3 hour introductory sails are the perfect opportunity for groups of students to get out on the water and have fun. This class is for both physically and mentally adaptive students. The course adapts to the level of the participants, so it is great for both seasoned sailors and complete beginners! Each sail is done on our J24 sailboats with an instructor on-board. For high functioning students, we have Access Dinghies, which are 2 person boats specifically designed for adaptive sailors. All participants will enjoy a cruise on the water, learn teamwork and have fun! Please contact the office at 415-421-2225 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
